A white-knuckle action adventure that thrives on surprising its readers from the first page to the last, to reveal too much about the plot would ruin the fun of discovery, but it’s smart, exciting stuff. Part deep sea horror, part post-apocalyptic sci-fi, The Wake is unlike anything you’ve ever read before. Written by Snyder and drawn by Sean Murphy, The Wake is a 10-issue Vertigo miniseries that’s now available in a hardcover collected edition. Reading The Wake for the first time is a similar experience, only instead of reinvigorating classic characters, the comic reinvigorates two beloved sci-fi genres. Well, we’re always going to bring you the latest news and excitement surrounding Superman, Batman and the rest of your favorite heroes here on, but we thought it might be fun to occasionally highlight a comic or graphic novel being published through our Vertigo line that we think might interest fans like you in a new feature that we’re calling “Vertigo for the DC Fan.”ĭo you remember the first time you read Scott Snyder’s “The Black Mirror” or “The Court of Owls” and suddenly it felt like you were discovering Batman for the first time? In fact, we’ll go so far as to say that you’re probably a pretty faithful DC Comics reader. That hopefully that quality would sweep you up because it's the more important aspect of the book at the end of the day, and the thing that kept us happy working on it was that it was always about doing that and being unafraid together and pushing each other to try things we hadn't on the page. We’re big super hero fans around here, and we’re guessing that if you’re reading this, you are as well. I want it to be a book you read, put down and say "I want to go try something i've never tried before" or "I want to go do something that I'm afraid to do." Do you know what I mean? That was the hope.

The way that those questions are answered is satisfying, because there's enough so it doesn't seem like we didn't know what we were doing, and you understand that there's a design, but at the same time you see the point wasn't to create a viable creation myth or a viable monster at the bottom at the ocean or a viable set of sea pirates two hundred years from now. It's a book about exploring and being unafraid.

But you're building in a sort of a manner by which those things would be subsumed by the emotional crescendo of the book, so that when you get to the end it's less about "here are the things that went unanswered factually" and more about how everything makes sense emotionally.
